Order line 07528 007872.

We are happy to install a stove you have already purchased for £150 plus travel, or provide only the stove for £100 if required.

Please consider, if you are over 60-70 miles away it would be very helpful if you could offer accommodation for one night.  The caravan or boat itself will be perfectly fine.

Making a kids TV show

A great day filming at UCB yesterday! Things are coming on apace with season two, the songs sound great and the show is funnier than ever! I am sure that kids and dare I say it, the odd adult are going to love it!

Adrian Page as Mr Bosanti-Crayco will have you laughing, a side of him you've never seen before, what a star!

I'm not certain of the exact date, but broadcast is scheduled in for February! So a whole new batch of antics will be hitting your screens in less than 3 months!

As ever there will be lots of clips to watch on our Youtube channel, and we'll be sure to keep you updated here!

Christian kids' songs!

I can't say how thrilled I am to have these little tackers enjoying my song in the USA!  Well done kids!  And well done to the guitarist for all the hard work he's put in with these children.  It may seem like just a little thing, but this is the very reason I wrote this song; so kids could laugh, be silly have fun and shout 'Thank you!' up to a God who they feel is a smiling, joyful Creator.

I am especially impressed with the little sweetheart about 3 minutes in who goes for it so wholeheartedly.  Well done you!

How to make a TV show on a low micro budget.

I must admit,  I hesitate to share this stuff.  I don't want to shatter any illusions. The setup we have at UCB for creating our main show, Jovis Bon-Hovis and the Creation Crew is a very good setup, multi camera shoot, great quality equipment, top notch lighting rigs with all the lighting you could ask for, sound-proofing, separate gallery with multiple monitors and facilities for remote live camera switching, high quality radio microphones and so much more!

On top of that, as anybody who understands production and production values will clearly see, we have various experts specializing in their own areas.  We have somebody who knows all about lighting, and expert at editing, camera people and sound technicians, as well as myself being responsible for creating the content of the shows.

So the end result of our main Christian kids' TV show Jovis Bon-Hovis and the Creation Crew, although it is produced on an extremely tight budget, is nice and clean and polished.

Now compare that to the work I do in the home studio.  I am having to face the reality that it is impossible to achieve the same kinds of results as one person working alone with very limited equipment.  But the challenge is an exciting and inspiring one, to milk every last drop of potential out of the equipment and opportunities I have.

I don't feel I have done that yet, 20 years ago my setup would have seemed pretty dreamy to a budding producer; instant high definition movies edited live on screen at the click of a mouse at a cost many would find affordable.  And I am certain that there are many ways I can improve on the productions I am attempting at the moment.  I find myself pining for more lights, more space, more cameras, more people, but if I think about it, I don't imagine God will bless me with those things until He knows I have fulfilled the potential of everything He's given me so far.

So that's what I am going to do.  I have every intention of producing a higher volume and broader range of Christian media, a Christian chat show, a family quiz, another children's show, more songs and kids music perhaps from other artists.  But now is a time of honing and milking skills, and making the very best of what I have, so that when the time comes to move up a step, invest in more equipment, bring in some help and setup a more significant studio I will be ready to fully utilize it properly.  I don't think that time is too far away, it 'feels' close at hand.

Anyway, I thought you may be interested in having a little look at the setup.  In these pictures you can see the lighting arrangement, ordinary domestic lamps but with 100 watt halogen bulbs, pumping out a good amount of light.  They were about £3 each at a charity shop, and the bulbs about £2 each. The backgrounds are cardboard boxes which had contained a TV, and the paints are my kids' poster paints.  I ink the edges with an ordinary black marker.

The space I use is the garage, and it is extremely tight; it is still used as a garage and is shared with kids' bikes and tools!  Quite a squash!  My camera for home shoots is an ordinary digital video camera, a Sanyo Xacti.  It is full HD, but not so good indoors.  Lovely for outside in the bright light, but the colour balance seems to let it down on my little home set.  You can pick one up on ebay for £30-£35.

So camera and lighting with bulbs would cost about £75.  The tinfoil you can see shaped around the lamps is remarkably successful, I have simply curved and shaped the foil into a bowl shape and folded the foil several times to increase the thickness.  Be sure to get baking foil and not wrapping foil to cope with intense heat from the bulbs.  This intensifies the light and enables you to direct it.

On the ceiling you can see something that looks like tracing paper which softens and disperses some of the light, it's important that some of the main lights are dispersed like this. Try it both ways to get a taste for why and how it works.  I was fortunate enough to be given a bit of colour neutral professional stuff, but tracing paper will do the job.   So you'll have to spend a fiver on that.  The most significant outlay will be the machine you use to edit because sadly there is a minimum standard you simply must purchase, otherwise you'll just tear your hair out when you can't edit.  You can pick up a used machine which will just about handle HD editing for £200.  Possibly less if you're canny, so come on, friends and neighbours???

There's a massive amount of software out there trying to grab your attention, including some very high-end stuff which has a very low yearly subscription called Lightworks.  Amazing kit, but very top-end.  Is that really what you need?  I find Magix movie edit pro fast and easy, intuitive and fun and it cost me £29.

In a home studio you can get away with an old-fashioned hand-held mic, or a mic on a table or suspended from a rafter, radio tie-mics are very expensive.  You'll also need some kind of usb preamp interface, to plug the mics into, which then runs into your pc enabling you to manage the sound.  You can plug a mic into your pc directly of course, but...just don't!  My mic cost me £19, and a preamp can cost anywhere from £12 upwards.  Spend a little more if you can.  I use the Saffire 6 usb, which came with an extremely good and immeasurably helpful 8 track sound recorder which I use very very often.  I would recommend it, Ableton Live Light 8 Alesis edition, or whichever software you can get for cheap.  You can edit the entire soundtrack for your movie with ease, and create music for it all on the same piece of software.  Extremely helpful.  Use a midi keyboard (£30) to make the whole music production process simpler, even if you don't play the piano it's just helpful to have this keyboard as an input device.  Ideal for making a simple theme tune, background music which you will fully own the rights to enabling you to monetise your videos on Youtube.

So there you have it, a simple HD studio setup for aroud £400.

But before you prepare to hit the big time, let's have a look at the differences in what is achieved with the two different ways of producing, here's is an example of the $400 setup:

And here is an example of the tens of thousands setup with numerous experts hands:

Kids songs versus Christian kids' songs.

Some feedback would be appreciated here.

Obviously the market for general children's content such as alphabet songs, numeracy songs and classic fun kids' songs like nursery rhymes and the like is going to be far larger than the market for Christian kids' songs.

Should I be focusing only on creating good quality Christian kids songs and worship songs, kids' praise and the like, or should I diversify on the channel and create more general Children's content? The idea is, if I am creating more general kids content which will appeal to a wider audience then I may well get children and families watching my good Christian content and Christian kids' songs which they might not otherwise come across, making for an effective ministry and a powerful outreach. So it works well in practical terms regarding growing and audience and business potential (which of course I have a duty to consider as a father raising a family) but also seems a wise strategy in terms of reaching people with a positive Christian message.

I guess I'm struggling in my own mind to target my market, I'm not settled as to who I am trying to reach. I also want to create content for adults, which would be Christian, but I don't really want a whole separate channel...

Any thoughts?

Here's my newest Christian kids song anyway. I'm really pleased with the song, but the video is not up to standard. Talk about dancing like your dad! Yep, that's me right there, daddy! Can you believe I was cool once? Seems like a LONG time ago now! Still, the tiny tots like it!!!

New youtube channel

Have a look at some of my new videos on my new channel 'Andy In The Drawer'.  This is just a silly private project, it's me having a bit of fun with my alter-ego Andy, a little guy who lives in my desk drawer!  It's something of a spoof of the 'How to Draw' tutorials which are all over youtube, evidently I'm not the best artist, and not really in a position to be showing people how to do it, fortunately my helping hand Andy thinks I'm the best artist ever.  Or does he???

Kids alphabet song ABC phonics kids song video.

Have you seen our new kids alphabet song?  It's a great fun happy version of the classic, sung through twice with a new puppet character.  The first time it's sung through the normal way, and the second time it's sung using the sounds of the letters phonetically.  It's a great fun way of learning the alphabet which kids will really enjoy, and the letters appear on screen in capitals and lower case.

PLEASE SHARE THIS VIDEO ON YOUR FACEBOOK, BLOG OR WEBSITE, THANKS!

Non-Christian videos on Youtube

You may have noticed some diversification on the Youtube channel.

The main Youtube channel has been re-named 'Kids' Songs Forever', and there are some key reasons for that.  The Christian kids' songs are the elements of the show which get the most views, obviously this is because they work as stand-alone videos.  The clips get less views as they are just that; clips.  Being just brief sections of the show they have limited use.

The channel will remain the online video home of all things to do with 'Jovis Bon-Hovis and the Creation Crew', but an important decision has been made to include videos on the channel which are not directly Christian.  There are two main reasons for this, one noble and one practical.

Firstly, it's very difficult to run a business on such a small and niche market, namely Christian Children's Media.  We needed to broaden our target.

Secondly, and this is crucial, we are keen to serve God in everything we produce.  Drawing a non-Christian demographic into an arena where they will find Christian content presents a rare opportunity to share the good news, speak openly about Jesus and normalise a relationship with God in a media environment where the two types of movie would not normally be found together.

Christian-only content will tend to preach to the converted, and reach children in Christian families.  Broadening our range will enable us to reach those who would not otherwise come across religious content.

How much money can I make putting videos on Youtube?

This question doesn't get any less relevant to the millions of wanna be Youtube stars out there who want to make a living from people telling them they are awesome, and by sitting in front of a computer all day.  First of all, I'll give you a straight answer which you may be looking for, but please read on; it's not as simple as it may all appear.

You can expect to make about roughly somewhere between £1-£2 for every thousand monetised views you get on Youtube.  In US dollars I guess that's $1.50-$3.00.  But it's not an exact science, there are so many variables to take into consideration.

Firstly, getting those thousand views is extremely difficult.  At first glance it may look as if all vids on youtube have several thousand/hundred thousand views, so a few bucks per vid is easy right?  But how often do you go to page ten, page 100, page 1000 of the results, and see the many many MILLIONS of videos which have 3 views, 13 views, 19 views.  The videos which have over a thousand and could earn you a buck are a drop in the ocean.

That said, don't give up!  There are people who make a living from their youtube vids.  I am starting to make some amount of money, enough that it's worth doing.  The crucial thing is this; have you got good quality content which people will want to watch to the end?  Are you able to produce such content consistently, regularly, and over a long period of time building up a significant body of work ongoing?

Do you have the time to put in to managing and promoting your channel?  Don't bother doing this for a bit of cash on the side, it won't work.  Once you get to the bit of cash on the side stage, you may as well keep going because you've probably broken the back of it!

Ask yourself, are you just another kid wanting to video himself playing Minecraft?  Are you yet another teenager thinking that the world is somehow especially interested in you spouting teen wisdom in front of your webcam?  If so, go away, have another think.  If it feels easy, you're wasting your time.  If you think just you as yourself are so ace and cool the world owes it to you to make you a star, go away.  Come back when you've thought about this:

What do you have that nobody else has?  What are you good at which is special to you?  What do you love?  What are you passionate about? Now think about how you can share that in a way nobody else has, which is engaging, enlightening, interesting and tight.  Then go and learn about film editing.

If you are deadly serious and this is your career, it absolutely can be done, but it will take all the energy and commitment of any other career, with all the frustration, hard work, set-backs and frustrations.  It is likely to be a couple of years before you start really 'getting it', and figure out how to bring everything together into a solid income and a lifestyle.  Of course you may have a viral video that catapults you into international stardom overnight...oh wait, no you won't.  Hard work and a good product, there is no easy fast buck, apart from a lottery.  And you can't live your life hoping on that.

Christian kids TV production diary update

WOW!  What a week!  Filming at UCB has been a real pleasure, we are actually on schedule, things are going according to plan and the shows seem better constructed a somewhat more confident than season one.

There have been boxes of slime to sit it, electrocution of furry animals AND Mr Bon-Hovis, excessive lollipop consumption, flying bananas and terrifying giant gorrillas.  And that's just the first few episodes!

Adrian Page is becoming quite the star as an intimidating and boorish Mr Bosanti-Crayco!  All in all, it's coming together as a great set of programmes so far, all with a heart set on encouraging children to take ownership of their own personal relationship with God.

Making Christian kids TV at UCB Kids.

Here at the UCB TV studios again today, helping out with Andi and Jack's new links for the summer holidays. Great fun!

They really add some brightness and fun to the links between the shows, 'Broom Cupboard" style. If you're not in the UK, it was a well known puppet and presenter links section on BBC1 in the eighties.

Christian kids song Thank you Jesus

While we're working on season two it's nice to not that things are picking up on the Youtube channel.

We're getting a great response from one of our most popular song 'Thank You', it's a lovely song about the simple beauty of a 'Thank You' prayer, when you just don't know what to pray about!
Join Jovis bon-hovis on facebook
We're getting some positive feedback and good audience retention (the amount of people who watch the videos to the end) on the other Creation Crew stuff too.

Technically of course, 'Thank You' might not be part of the show, it was produced between seasons and hasn't yet appeared in the show, and there are none of the Creation Crew characters.  But it is of course done entirely in the spirit of the show and due to it's popularity I'm sure we'll end up smuggling it into season two somewhere!

Give it a listen, and share this bit of fun with your kids.  Don't forget to share on your facebook too! x

Christian kids TV production diary of Jovis Bon-Hovis and the Creation Crew Season Two!

Getting intense now...

As the shoot draws nearer it's getting more and more exciting, and the pressure is building! The scripts continue to flow I'm pleased to say, no writer's block as yet!

In season two I'm finding the flow of writing more comfortable, the scenario feels less restrictive since having seen how it all pans out in season one; I understand where I have leeway and flexibility in terms of where I can put humour, timing of the story taking place in the house, banter between characters...
Join Jovis bon-hovis on facebook
One of the key developments which I hope will be evident is that Monkey is a much stronger character, rather than perching and giving the occasional nod or comment, he is a character who is essential to plot, and has a 'part" to play more often.

Early Bird and Woody have more lines and their characters are strengthened, and with the introduction of two new characters including the intimidating Mrs Bosanti-Crayco, season two promises more depth and substance.

Kids TV production Diary Andi Markham and Jack

Wow, what a fantastic time we had at UCB yesterday!

Andi Markham and his friend Jack will be presenting the Summer Line-up of kids shows during the holidays, so your kids are in for a real treat! Jack is such a character, a six year old lad bursting with fun and cheekiness! We really hit it off.

Jack was kind enough to let me do a guest appearance on his links, so Mr Bon-Hovis will be there with Jack on the first Saturday of the Hols.
Join Jovis bon-hovis on facebook
Jack certainly had his work cut out, poor young lad, he had to film seven or eight 2/3 minute links for every day of the holidays! Wow!

Jack and Andi are doing amazing work in the UK, sharing gospel truths with kids in schools, in a similar sort of way to what the Creation Crew and Mr Bon-Hovis do on TV, but working directly with the children.

UK Children's television production

Another day, another Dormouse, as my uncle used to say.

Prizes for anybody who can let us know what that means!

Here we are now, counting down the days until we are back in front of the cameras, in the studio shooting season two of our fantastic new Christian kids TV show Jovis Bon-Hovis and the Creation Crew!
Join Jovis bon-hovis on facebook
Filming in the studio begins August 12th, for two whole weeks.  That's pretty awesome, and I must say I am SO looking forward to it!  That's only six weeks away!

The ideas are coming thick and fast, we really want season two to be pacey, eye catching and engaging so I'm having to be quite inventive  to create over five hours of material which will play out in a relatively small space with not a huge amount of props.

Scripting episode 5 is underway! There has been planning done previously as I may have mentioned, we aren't doing the complete script from concept to completion with just six weeks to go, but most of it!  They are likely to be completed two weeks before filming, leaving us time to lest them rest for a couple of weeks before re-visiting and proofing with a fresh 'eye'.

The theme for episode 5 is jealousy.  Don't you ever find it hard to be pleased for somebody because of their good fortune, especially if it's something you dearly wanted for yourself? Perhaps not, perhaps you are far more holy than that, but Mr Bon-Hovis sure isn't!  He's got a bit of work to do on that area!

How to make a Christian kids TV show

Production diary for season two of the fantastic new Christian kids TV show 'Jovis Bon-Hovis and the Creation Crew'!

Episode four script completed! (Applause, mini celebrations, small indoor fireworks go off *POP*!)

We're trying to be a little more adventurous in season two, there are one or two more pieces of set, and two or three new characters which you'll get to meet.

As a writer, it gives me a lot more scope for scenarios and situations, there's more opportunity for changes in tone and mood with different personalities joining in the stories.

I find I have to keep reminding myself that such devices are available, and force myself to introduce them. And they are bringing a whole lot of fun with them, really enriching the whole environment of the house.

We've also been carrying on with the filming of the VTs at Creation Crew HQ, with the girls finally able to play with something they actually made last Saturday. It was so covered in wet paint that we couldn't finish off the filming!

It's quite tricky writing this, I'm never sure how much information I should give away...it's unlikely that it's going to spoil the TV experience for the kids, as children aren't really going to be following the production diary, but there is a tradition in production of not revealing all...however I can reveal that the little fella below will be making a cameo appearance!

Christian kids TV production on a tight budget

Jovis Bon-Hovis and the Creation Crew Christian kids TV show production diary!

After I have written this post on facebook it will be posted to three different blogs and four different websites. Each of the blogs will then be submitted to places like Pinterest, Stumbleupon, Twitter and Tumblr, most of which require descriptions of the articles and keywords. So I say I'm scriptwriting today, in fact it will be a good two hours of article writing and blogging first. It's all very well having a fantastic new show, but people need to know about it!

A lot of work is being done to promote Jovis Bon-Hovis and the Creation Crew on youtube too, we have over 300 subscribers and that is increasing daily, hopefully over the next few years as we produce more and more of a higher and higher quality we will attract a strong and loyal fan base!

The youtube channel itself has to be tweaked and adjusted daily, to keep the search engines interested, otherwise it will stagnate and drop down the search engine results and nobody will find our stuff.

So production diary this may be, but public awareness of the production must go hand in hand! So friends, don't forget to do what you can for the Creation Crew and share our videos, links, blogs and articles wherever you can. It gives us such a lift here at Creation Crew HQ!

Here's a blast from the past for you, this is just over two years ago now, at this point we had no idea that UCB TV would co-produce the show with us, is was a labour of love, we just wanted to do something nice for kids.

Christian kids TV production

Producing a Christian Kids TV show on a tight budget.
All work and no chuckling makes Jovis a dull boy!24.06.2013 Jovis Bon-Hovis and the Creation Crew Christian kids" TV show production diary.
How do we know if we're getting a script right for the show? There are a number of things we're trying to achieve; we want the show to be edifying, we want it to encourage children to engage with the faith on a personal level and on their own terms in a way they can relate to, we want to tackle issues which 3-7 year olds are going to find relevant to them in their everyday lives. We want to offer a viable alternative to secular television which the children themselves will choose into.

And we want it to be funny!

And a good measure surely has to be whether or not it's making me laugh as I write. If I don't find it funny, how can I possibly expect anybody else to?

I must admit, I have an awful lot of fun writing for the show. Most of the actual 'writing" time isn't spend actually typing words on a keyboard, it's spent staring into space, getting distracted, snapping back into 'Creation Crew" mode and drifting back out again. The most successful writing times are when I'm almost dreaming; I'm in the house with the characters watching a scenario play out in my head, then I can rewind it, play it out again, tweak and adjust, and when it's right I just know. I'll often say out loud 'YES!" and quickly start writing. And that may only be a paragraph or two, and then I have to stop typing, and drift off again!

I should also point out that the whole process is covered by a lot of prayer, and it has been since the beginning. We pray daily for the show and its success generally, we pray morning and evening for the specific area we are working on, and on a more intimate level I pray privately as I am working for God to lead me in what to share with the children and what I should open up to them in any given show.

The Lord is very faithful in his walk with us on this programme.

On Friday I had quite a block, I found that I was drawing a blank everywhere I looked. From quiet thinking time, aimlessly drifting through facebook time, re-reading old scripts and visualising was all coming to nothing. But when I lifted this up to the Lord my mind brightened and cheerful, relevant and funny ideas began blossoming in my mind. That has now become part of episode four and will be appearing on your screen soon!

I hope you're enjoying my insights into this production, I have begun this diary quite early in the process so I will be posting on the whole journey from filming to song writing to editing and launch!

In the meantime enjoy this sweet picture of Charlie, who you will have seen guest appearing in the show on the VTs. Just a little puppy here, we can be pretty certain he was asleep!

Kids TV show production diary

So the performance licenses have all been approved for the Creation Crew Kids, Betsy Bella and Flossie. This means they can work on and off set, and even take occasional half days off school for narration and voice over work.

Did you notice that Early Bird and Dora Mouse are voice by Betsy and Bella respectively?

It's going to be a busy day today, we have 13 VT's to film for the 'Through the Window" sections, and we're hoping to get two of them filmed in one day today.
Join Jovis bon-hovis on facebook
These are filmed in and around Creation Crew HQ using an ordinary good quality handy-cam. It's shot in full HD at 60 fps, but it's quite a straightforward home use type camera. Clearly there is a lot of top-end equipment available, but the handy-cam feel is quite intimate, it's convenient and gives a quick and easy results lending an un-contrived dynamism to these sections.

We want a complete change of atmosphere, and a break from the studio pace.

This approach to film making has also meant that the VTs are as close to a genuine experience for the girls as possible. While they do take some direction such as 'Can you just do that again" or 'Wait for me to get ahead so I can film you coming towards the camera." or 'Put the boat in the water when I say go." all of the VTs do involve the children genuinely enjoying an activity which is a lot of fun for them.

In case you were wondering, VT stands for video tape, you may have heard people on TV saying 'roll vt" at which point a previously made film plays. So we call them VTs.

Jovis Bon-Hovis and the Creation Crew production Diary

Jovis Bon-Hovis and the Creation-Crew season two production diary:

Things are all getting rather suspicious in episode four. Not only is Mr Bon-Hovis being nice to Woody Louse, but Woody Louse seems to find the experience rather touching!

What's going on in the Creation Crew house? All will be revealed at the proper time.

And I imagine some people have wondered if we were ever going to get to meet the mysterious Mrs Bosanti-Crayco, and exclusive news, YES!

Mrs Bosanti-Crayco herself will begin making regular appearances
from now on adding an extra dimension to the show!

So today we are working on scripts, and it looks like Mr Bon-Hovis is in for a surprise in this episode, why is he trying to blow up all these balloons? He doesn't even know himself! Mrs Bosanti-Crayco has asked for his help, but is there something she's not telling him?

Meanwhile, Stripy Monkey waits patiently on the Mantlepiece of Creation Crew HQ for his time to shine:

How to do a prayer walk

How to do a prayer walk with kids.

On a beautiful sunny day like it is here, all I can think about is getting outside and spending some time in the garden!

Well for now, I'll satisfy myself with watching the pretty birds as they feed in the trees just outside my window.  But let's continue the theme of encouraging our children to pray by getting them outside and looking for things to talk to God about.
Join Jovis bon-hovis on facebook
As parents and leaders we want to encourage a living and natural relationship with God in our children, one which has it's place in the every-day, and the ordinary.

We don't want our little ones to feel that God is set aside for special occasions or celebrations, or for when we want something special, or something goes especially wrong.

The casual and almost irreverent relationship with a God who is right there with them, and alongside them in everything they do, desiring to be a part of every aspect of their lives is a beautiful and precious gift to make available to a child.

So why not take your child or children out for a little prayer walk today?  Here's the deal; take a watch with you and time two minute walks.  After each two minute section, pause where you are and be quiet for a little while, look around and try to find something to pray about, and pray about it right there and then.

Encourage the kids to be peaceful, listen to their hearts, find inspiration from what they can see or hear, smells in the air, a neighbour's fence which is breaking, a baby crying or people laughing and celebrating across the street.  What is the world telling them?  How could God bless the things you are observing?

What you are looking for is ways of encouraging an openness with God, a willingness to share your heart dialogue with him in the little things, and to be in commune with him in your normal mundane activities.  Also, you are teaching your kids to be observant, to look around and see needs, opportunities to be thankful, opportunities to care.

Take the challenge, go on a prayer walk with your kids today!

How to teach kids about gratitude

Let's have a Loopy Lunch!

This lovely simple idea will have your kids thinking that you are the most fun person in the world, ever! This is going to get you some brownie points!
Join Jovis bon-hovis on facebook
What you are going to do is make some sandwiches and drinks with your children, but with a difference. Using jam, for sweet sticky fun, make your sandwiches with your kids into as many different fun shapes as you can think of. You could cut out stars and moons, cars and balls, rockets and table tennis bats! Your only limit is your imagination.

Don't forget, keep any off cuts and make a point of putting them out for the birds, no waste!

For your drinks, you are going to get even sillier! Your juice or water will be poured from a teapot, and you will all drink out of the daftest things you can find. Use egg cups, serving spoons, saucepans or even a wok, but no cups or glasses!

Now go to your favourite place and have a picnic lunch together. If you don't have the weather, spread out a blanket on the floor and have an indoor picnic!

Your kids will think it's the most fun!

Now here's the thing; when you've all enjoyed eating together and making the sandwiches together, explain to the children how simple your meal was. There was no lobster, no steak, no caviar, no silver plates or chandeliers. You were able to enjoy yourselves with what little you had.

Talk to your children about how we should be grateful for what we have and make the very best of it, and not waste our time complaining about what we don't have. This attitude of gratitude is at the core of any successful and effective relationship with God.

Ask the children what they most enjoyed about the meal. Try to leave them with the sense that their enjoyment had nothing to do with how much 'stuff' they had.

Continuing the theme of encouraging your children to pray, share with your kids that approaching God with a grateful heart will bring us much closer to him than going to him always grumbling and complaining. We should make a habit of looking for the good in our circumstances, and thanking God for that.

Encouraging kids to pray craft activity

How to encourage young children to pray.

This is a real favourite of mine, something very close to my heart. We believe that celebrating God should be a natural and joyful part of everyday life for your child, and integrating their relationship with familiar activities is a great way to enhance that notion.

So today we're going to follow the Arty Crafty Time slot from the show, and learn how to make the perfect paper plane, or rather prayer-o-plane! And the most satisfying thing about this is that it's a really good flyer, and very easy to make, so you'll have great fun with your child after taking the opportunity to share with them about different ways of praying to God.

How to make a prayer tree

How to make a prayer tree.

Happy half-term holidays! A time of business and mayhem with the kids under your feet, always wanting the next exciting thing!

Well don't you worry, all of our activities are designed to be inexpensive and easy. Perfect accessible fun for you and yours.

Continuing the theme of enabling your children to take ownership of their prayer lives, we're going to make some prayer trees today! I'm sure this is a variation on a theme you'll be familiar with.

Using the templates below draw out two tree shapes on stiff card. The size we've used is A5.

Notice the key difference between the two shapes is that one has a slot cut from the top halfway down, the other has a slot cut from the bottom halfway up. This way, the two pieces can slide into each other making the cross shape you can see Stripy Monkey posing next to in the picture, and it will stand up.

Using the leaf shape provided you will have just the right size and shape to fold in half and hang over the slots in the branches.

The more foliage you add, the more interesting the tree will look.

The purpose of this is quite simple, and really fab. It's difficult to pray right? Especially as a kid. And how many tiny tots are going to keep a successful prayer diary?

So all you need to encourage them to do is to think of ONE thing to pray about each day. When you have prayed, write the subject of the prayer on the leaf and add it to the tree. After a few days, you'll have a prayer tree full of ideas for your children to refer to, to help them confidently pray in a way they have full ownership of.

If you're feeling artistic, you could modify this so the tree was covered in leaves and fruit. Or even monkeys and birds!

We'd love to see pictures of your prayer trees, do send them in to share!
